Budapest - More Sights!
If you are planning on staying for more than a few days, you might want to venture further afield.
Markets in Budapest
Ecseri Piac, a large open air flea market, is open all week but particularly busy at weekends. Getting there isn't as easy as some other sights, but it is worth the effort..... For a local shopping experience, we recommend the food market at Ujpest. Take the metro from Nyugati to Ujpest and the market is behind the attractive church-like building across the road, on Szent Istvan Ter. For more information,
this website has a short selection of markets.
Aquincum
The excavated ruins of this Roman settlement, in the Roman province of Lower Pannonia, are interesting to visit. More information can be found at
the Aquincum website
Day Trips
Several towns can be reached as a day trip from Budapest. Esztergom and Szentendre are both very picturesque towns on the banks of the Danube. Szentendre is also close to the large open-air Skanzen museum, showing Hungarian life and architecture through the ages. Visegrad, with its hilltop castle overlooking the river, is also a popular destination. For more information on these and other towns close to Budapest, the
Budapest Info website is a good place to start.
